Help Prune Marlborough Community Orchard @ Marlborough Common
Feb 3 @ 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

It’s that time of year again when orchard trees need some care to encourage a healthy and fruitful summer season, and the Marlborough Community Orchard (MCO) team is looking for volunteers to help on Saturday mornings soon.

  • Can you help us on SATURDAY 3rd FEBRUARY?
  • Or on SATURDAY 24th FEBRUARY?
  • Or, better still, on BOTH those mornings!
  • Please join us if you can, even if only for an hour or so …

Great gardening skills aren’t necessary. All we require are interested and willing pairs of hands. So please come along. We’d love you to bring your family – and invite your friends (young and old) to join us too. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome on Saturday 3rd February when we will be up on The Common.

As always, our party will be led by horticulturist Patricia Rowell, who will teach us and answer questions as we go along. We will prune apple, pear, quince, medlar and mulberry trees; and we will check the health and wellbeing of all MCO fruit trees. We will adjust stakes and tree ties where necessary, weed carefully round the feet of all the trees, and feed and mulch them to give them a good headstart for the year ahead.

If you have them, please bring some gardening tools, such as secateurs, gardening gloves, kneeler, small hand-held fork for weeding and trowel for spreading mulch. A grass rake, long-handled pruners and/or pruning saw could also be useful. MCO will provide fertiliser, mulch and sacks for collecting prunings and weeds.

SATURDAY 3rd FEBRUARY: Meet and start work at 9.30 on the Diamond Jubilee Plantation, on The Common, just south of the Rugby Club (where there are one each of the 10 rare native Wiltshire varieties of apple that MCO is helping to save from extinction, plus a number of pears, quinces, medlars, plums, damsons and a mulberry). Next we will cross The Common to Roger’s Meadow to tend more mature apple trees, then on to Wye House Gardens to care for a dozen orchard trees planted there.

SATURDAY 24th FEBRUARY: Meet at 9.30 to tend the group of 11 espalier apple trees planted along the eastern wall of Waitrose car park. Next, go further west along to High St to care for espaliers and free-standing apple trees in Priory Gardens. Then on to several smaller plantations: St Peter’s Churchyard, where a trio of fruit trees require our attention, St Mary’s Churchyard, Plume of Feathers Gardens and, finally, Reed’s Ground.

PLEASE LET US KNOW ON WHICH DATE(S) YOU HOPE TO JOIN US.
WE LOOK FORWARD VERY MUCH TO SEEING YOU, THANK YOU.
Philippa Davenport and the MCO team

Note: We expect to finish about 12.30 on both Saturdays but exact timings will depend on the numbers of helping hands, the state of the trees and the weather, of course. Philippa’s mobile (07963 313822 – not a smartphone) will be switched on all morning so – if you do not join us at 9.30 – you can ring at any time for an update on our progress to help work out where and when to meet up with us.

Rose bed planting in Victoria Park @ Victoria Park, Newbury
Feb 24 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Rose bed planting in Victoria Park @ Victoria Park, Newbury

Newbury Town Council is further enhancing Victoria Park’s floral displays, with the Mayor of Newbury, Cllr David Fenn, leading efforts to plant over 200 new rose plants and over 200 new lavender shrubs. The existing rose beds were first planted around 15 years ago and needed replacing.

On Saturday 24 February, the Mayor will plant the first rose at 10am, after which the Victoria Park Working Group, together with the team behind Newbury in Bloom and the Friends of Victoria Park will begin planting, with members of the public invited to come along, bring a spade and be part of the day.

Cllr Adrian Edwards, Leader of the Council said, “We are inviting volunteers to the Park from 10am to help with the planting. The design will be marked out, ready for the roses to be planted so we are encouraging anyone to please bring a spade and come and take part in this community event”.

He continued, “We would like to thank our sponsors, Tesco’s ‘Bags of Help’, Rivar Sand and Gravel, Volker Highways and Sundog Hire, without whom we would not have been able to complete this project for the Community to enjoy.”
