Great Shefford Youth Club is now run by Gill Hall and Dave Crook and helped by local volunteers, for children aged 9 – 16 years from Great Shefford and the surrounding area (from Hungerford, Wantage, Newbury, etc).

We have membership with Berkshire Youth, and have regular sessions provided by SPLAT (Berkshire Youth’s Sports, Leisure and Activities Team), which is a mobile unit that travels across Berkshire delivering sports and activities to young people.

Here is the upcoming schedule:

Pericles All at Sea @ east garston village hall
Jan 19 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Pericles All at Sea @ east garston village hall

A free performance followed by a ‘pay-what- you-will’ collection.

A fascinating re-telling of Shakespeare’s Pericles. Marina is a young woman determined to make her way in the world on her own terms, facing the perils of the Mediterranean Sea.  Her father, Pericles, abandoned her having been forced to flee the country; her mother died on board ship giving birth to her.  Will she ever be reunited with her family?

This pair of  talented story-tellers skilfully and convincingly flit between a multitude of characters to conjure a world where conflict and famine are devastating parts of Syria, Lebanon and Turkey; where a fisher woman finds bodies tangled in her nets; a young girl is sold to a brothel; and where the kindness of strangers saves those in danger at sea.

“A lovely bit of storytelling. Who would have thought a 400-year- old story could be so relevant to today.”

“Full of wit and charm but also with the pathos and power so important in conveying the moral undercurrent that runs through the story.”

It’s a bold and simple piece, fast-moving where the flick of a scarf transforms one character to another, where sea shanties are sung and props are ‘tumbled’ around the stage by ‘waves’.

“The duo create a wonderful sense of atmosphere – we hear sea shanties, we watch props get tumbled around the stage by waves, and we see Pericles pulled in to shore by a fisher-woman in a small but perfectly formed piece of physical theatre.”

Hacksaw Ridge at the Ramsbury Roxy @ Ramsbury Memorial Hall
Jan 19 @ 7:45 pm – 11:00 pm

Hacksaw Ridge is a 2016 biographical war drama film directed by Mel Gibson and written by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan, based on the 2004 documentary The Conscientious Objector.

The film focuses on the World War II experiences of Desmond Doss, an American pacifist combat medic who was a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, refusing to carry or use a firearm or weapons of any kind. Doss became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, for service above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Okinawa.

Andrew Garfield stars as Doss, with Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, and Vince Vaughn in supporting roles.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 86% based on 244 reviews, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The site’s critical consensus reads, “Hacksaw Ridge uses a real-life pacifist’s legacy to lay the groundwork for a gripping wartime tribute to faith, valor, and the courage of remaining true to one’s convictions.”[67] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 71 out of 100, based on 47 critics, indicating “generally favorable reviews”. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave an average grade of “A” on an A+ to F scale.

Hungerford Comedy Club @ Hungerford Town Hall
Jan 19 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Another night of great stand-up comedy featuring six acts and regular compere Graeme Coulam.

Our opener, Jacob Hawley, is a rising star of the UK comedy scene. Having reached the final of the BBC New Comedy Awards, he has also been on radio 4 and enjoyed a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Then we have shorter sets from Eliza Fraser, Don Biswas, Stasia Buckle and Geoff Alderman. Having started out as part of a sketch duo with Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners C4) Stasia is now forging a successful career as a stand-up. Original, honest and a little bit rude, Stasia is a force to be reckoned with. Don blends acute political awareness with personal vulnerability, to beguile and charm an audience. Expect to be surprised by personal reflections on dyspraxia and race, and expect to laugh out loud too. Eliza is another young comedian on the rise. Her deeply personal material will keep you laughing deep in to January. Old comedian of the year semi-finalist, Geoff, is as funny as he is bald. Don’t let that cheeky smile fool you, he’s clever, original, and a little bit naughty.

Our headliner, Debra-Jane Appelby, is one of the best comics on the circuit, taking her no-nonsense northern wit the length and breadth of the UK. She has regularly featured on BBC radio, and won stacks of awards. Expect a riotous end to the evening as Debra gives her take on youth, the middle classes, family and her (current) home town of Hungerford.

Movement Meditation: “5 Rhythms” @ Liddington Village Hall
Jan 21 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Does life feel like a constant struggle?   Do you want to exercise but can’t follow a class or have 2 left feet? Like to dance, have fun and not be judged? Would you like to be more at peace with yourself?

If you have answered yes to any of these, then 5 Rhythms might be for you – come along to find out if it is.

DISCOVER HOW CONSCIOUS MOVEMENT CAN HELP YOU TO BE MORE AT PEACE AND COMFORTABLE WITH THE RHYTHMS THAT RULE YOUR LIFE…

No previous experience of dance needed, and all are welcome young, old, fit or unfit. No steps to learn and nothing to get right or wrong and no judgement from the teacher. You dance at your level.

Shall We Dance? Science Says ‘Go on, It’s Good for You’

Studies have started to emerge on the positive impacts community dance activity can have on different populations, across a range of issues. – see huffingtonpost.co.uk and dancing out of depression

The music is varied: electronica, jazz, classical, pop, rock and roll, alternative, some fast some slow.
PROGRAMME

We will go through the rhythms so that you can begin to feel them in your own way; you will be encouraged to “FLOW”  for yourself then to allow the beat to take you into “STACCATO”,  to then move into “CHAOS” with curiosity; to drop into “LYRICAL” and find that part of yourself that wishes to sing and embrace everything and then lastly to find peace and quiet in “STILLNESS”.

We will go through the 5 Rhythms with focus on being conscious of what is present for us in the moment and how our movement is affected by our thoughts and our feelings.   At the same time I will explore with you how each rhythm has its’ own flavour and each session is an exploration into being mindful and in the present.
We will look for the “sweet spot”, the place where we feel wholly together in body, feelings and mind; together with another, the group and the setting.  Searching for this combination of the whole self, and repeating the dance as we feel it, can lead into that energetic space where there is only the beat, your breath, your heartbeat and the space to be you
