Dr. Nigel Strudwick will look at the people of the Old Kingdom through the written word. It was at this time that continuous texts first appeared. Kings left decrees of exemptions for temples and official created elaborate tombs with inscriptions. Some early papyri show ordinary people at work and give clues to the temple rituals.

Porchlight Smokers

Often described as the ‘real deal’, every Porchlight Smoker show is different and no song is ever performed quite the same way twice. They play a varied and at times virtuoso repertoire that mixes self-penned works with covers made very much their own. A range of instruments, including banjo, guitar, lapsteel, stand-up bass and mandolin, even clarinet, accompany the band’s trademark four-part vocal harmonies.
Porchlight Smoker’s live gigs show off the band’s multi-national song writing talents, with Scott Smith, from Wichita, Kansas, bringing his extensive knowledge of the American folk tradition, Scotsman Steve Bell’s Celtic folk influence, and London born Fred Gregory’s well, very English identity all combining to form the band’s unique and exciting sound.

Expect to hear some songs from their latest album ‘Water into Sand’. The album has that trademark mash of roots styles that make up the Porchies sound along with the seductive vocal harmonies and a whole bunch of interesting musical instruments.

+ Bright Shadows

brightshadows-201

“Compellingly complete sound, beautifully balanced harmonies and a power that far exceeds just the two performers.” so said Stephen Jones, Amalfi Sessions.
Bright Shadows are a vocal harmony-driven acoustic pop rock duo based in Reading. With strong vocals and a lively delivery, the duo fuse a gritty brand of acoustic pop/rock with touches of folk and country. When they made an appearance at December’s Unplugged we wanted to hear more including some of the new material they were working on for their new CD.
