Pagoda Project @ ACE Space
Feb 17 @ 8:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Pagoda ProjectCaptivating and original, Folk Jazz fusion that will delight, surprise and entertain. The combination of Paul Hutchinson (Belshazzar’s Feast, Hoover the Dog) on accordion with a folk background and Karen Wimhurst (Cauld Blast Orchestra) on clarinets with a classical and jazz background. is not an obvious one but works oh so brilliantly. What they do have in common is they are both supremely talented musicians who bring something new and fresh to every performance.
David Kidman (Fatea) summed what to expect really well when he wrote “expect ebullient yet sensitive playing, with infectious, well-pointed rhythms, and a talent for taking tunes off into creative tangents, a real gift for affectionate pastiche, and a keen understanding of all manner of folk and world musics, classical and jazz disciplines. Oh, and a delicious sense of wordplay”.
Since Pagoda’s last appearance at ACE Space (in the days they were a “duo” rather than a “project”) they have recorded and released their first CD “Clarion” to great acclaim. Songlines gave them a 5 star review (the only 5 star review in an edition that reviewed over 60 CDs). Their last gig is still the only one where two encores were demanded by the audience. Pagoda Project gigs tend to be few and far between so don’t miss this opportunity.

James Foley

The son of Anglo-Irish parents, Foley has always had an inherent talent for mixing influences and styles seamlessly and in a very personal way. Living in Wantage he first came to our attention playing support for the Australian trio Bush Gothic at a gig in Oxford.
As a guitar player Foley has an individual style, based on traditional finger picking whilst incorporating elements of the delta blues and slide legends. His voice is simultaneously raspy and lush and characterised by his use of beautiful deep harmony on record.

FREE HR Advice Clinic @ Newbury College
Feb 19 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

1-1 Human Resources clinic. Bookable 1 hour appointments. Click here to book.

  • Free HR health check
  • Recruitment and selection
  • Develop your team to support high growth
  • Any people-related questions answered

Why?

Is your business ready to grow? Do you have the right team in place? The ‘right’ team has great attendance and timekeeping as well as making a positive contribution to your company. Do you know how to select and recruit that team and ensure they are your business’s greatest asset?

Also, following the Supreme Court ruling earlier this year, employees no longer have to pay a fee to bring a tribunal claim against their employers, so it is time to ensure you have the right policies and processes in place to avoid being one of those companies that experiences a rise in claims.

What?

1-1 sessions designed to give you an opportunity to explore your current people strategy and compliance with employment legislation. Whether you need advice on developing your team to improve performance and productivity, need to discuss your recruitment strategy or process to help you attract the best talent, or assistance with restructuring your organisation to support your growth ambitions, we can help you explore the issues that you need to consider. You can also take advantage of a complimentary HR health check on your current contracts of employment and employee handbook to ensure that you are not only compliant with employee legislation but are implementing HR best practice.

When?

Monday 19th February 2018

14:00 – 17:00

HR Clinic Expert – Katie Aldridge

Employing people can be the most rewarding, or the most frustrating part of running a business and, for The HR Dept Newbury it’s our approach that really sets us apart. Instead of telling small businesses what they can’t do, we tell them what they can do to achieve the results that they want.

With 20 years of experience in various HR roles, Katie’s supported both small companies and global corporates in a career spanning a range of industries from not-for-profit, education, through to financial and pharmaceutical. Now working to support small business she can support you with:

  • Employment law
  • People management
  • Contracts of employment
  • Disciplinary and grievance
  • Performance management
  • Absence management
  • Redundancy management
  • TUPE transfers
  • Employee surveys
  • Training and development

In fact, any people-related activities that help a company to achieve its business objectives. With this in mind, we can work with you on anything from a one-off employee issue through to a business restructure. From providing an updated contract template through to designing and implementing a full suite of employment policies and documents. From ad-hoc support to a regular on-site presence. The HR Dept also has a range of value added services which give smaller businesses access to HR tools that used to belong only to larger businesses. If you’re located in or around the Newbury area and are looking for proactive, pragmatic and friendly HR support then get in touch with The HR Dept Newbury – we look forward to working with you!
