The Vagina Dialogues Motivational Event for Women @ Herongate Club
Jan 18 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
The Vagina Dialogues Motivational Event for Women @ Herongate Club | England | United Kingdom

A unique motivational event to help women reach their potential through laughter, learning and sharing.

This evening with Lis Allen is an opportunity for reflection, increased self-awareness and clarity about who we are and the importance of our role as women in the 21st century. It has been running on a regular basis since 2013.

The relaxed format of part-presentation and part-discussion enables women of all ages to come together and share their insights and experience of being mothered/being a mother in a supportive, fun and interesting way.  So far the age range of the participants has been between 14 and 88, and the event has been held in various cities in the UK, Sweden and Brisbane, Australia.

By the way, it’s an event that you can come to time and time again….there’s obviously a structure to the evening but there are always new people in the room who ask different questions/bring different insights.  It’s like reading a book which you pick up again in six months time and think, “How on earth did I miss that!”

Ladies, bring your female friends and family. You may learn something that could change your life, or even better, maybe you’ll inspire someone else. Guaranteed thought-provoking and FUN – see you there.

Lis and the team x

NB ~ BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL FOR THIS EVENT – it usually sells out, so there won’t be tickets available on the door. Book NOW to avoid disappointment!  If you come in a group of 5 or more, you can all benefit from 20% discount on the full price. Email info@lisallen.com for the discount code. If you wish to pay by cheque or BACS, let us know via the same email address and we can raise an invoice.

WARNING! NB: One VERY important thing to note, this event isn’t for everyone. Come if you’re female and over 14, you’re non-judgmental, curious and have an open mind – oh, and you want to make a difference in the world :

PS! This event has nothing to do with the Vagina Monologues show.  This event is unique, and the best possible description is it’s a respectful, facilitated conversation – isn’t that what’s missing in today’s society?

Talking Bollocks @ Herongate Club
Jan 19 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Talking Bollocks @ Herongate Club | England | United Kingdom

Would you like to create a better/even better relationship with the key women in your life?

Would you like to understand yourself better/even better/gain some valuable insights?

Do you want to have a fun, thought-provoking and inspiring night out?

If the answer to one or more of the questions above is a ‘yes’, then this event is definitely for you.

A lot of the women who come to the Vagina Dialogues event have said how they wish their menfolk could hear some of what’s discussed in the room. An important facet of that event is the fact that the women feel safe to explore their thoughts, anxieties and aspirations.  That happens for them by being in the room with women only, so men won’t ever be attending the Vagina Dialogues.

However, we think it’s important to give men the same opportunity to explore some new ideas in a facilitated conversation – after all, isn’t it true that lots of men say they never manage to get a word in edgeways?!

So, chaps, this is your moment, the men-only event. What’s going to happen/be discussed? To be perfectly honest, not sure! We start off looking at how women might experience the world and move on to whatever the men in the room wish to talk about. One thing’s for sure, though – you’ll have a really good time, you’ll go away with some food for thought AND you’ll get to talk and listen to a load of bollocks, along with a room full of other blokes! What’s not to like? Check out the videos from previous participants here, for a bit more info

www.lisallen.com/talking-bollocks

NB One important thing to point out, this isn’t a show, it’s an event.  Also, booking is essential as tickets aren’t available on the door, so book NOW to avoid disappointment 🙂   Please note that tickets are NOT refundable once issued. If you find yourself unable to come, please gift your ticket to a friend.

What do you need to bring?

  • An open mind

What do you need to do?

  • Invite your friends to come with you – 20% discount for groups of 4 or more

See you there!

London Haydn Quartet @ St Lawrence Church
Jan 25 @ 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
London Haydn Quartet @ St Lawrence Church

Hear the amazing London Haydn Quartet at St Lawrence’s Church.

In 1799 Haydn was writing his last quartets just as Beethoven was writing his first. Haydn’s F major quartet, written with the humour and eloquence that earned him his reputation as the greatest composer of quartets, a grand masterpiece full of inspired invention. Beethoven’s B flat major quartet, firmly rooted in the grammar established by the monumental legacy of Haydn andMozart, but unmistakably uttered through the new dramatic narrative of the young composer.

A style so severe in its departure, it marks the time as a turning point in chamber music and surely would have contributed to Haydn’s sudden retirement from the genre. Accompanying these two works, one of Mozart’s last quartets, written with the cellist king of Prussia in mind. For the occasion, Mozart borrows a particularly egalitarian style of quartet writing from Haydn to achieve this typically tuneful and operatic quartet. Presenting these works from this trio of original string quartet masters is the London Haydn Quartet.

Having dedicated themselves to the traditions of music from this era, they perform the world over from London’s Wigmore Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. Their recordings of the complete Haydn quartet cycle on the Hyperion label have been met with international acclaim.

Hungerford Comedy Club @ Hungerford Town Hall
Jan 25 @ 8:00 pm – 10:30 pm
Hungerford Comedy Club @ Hungerford Town Hall | England | United Kingdom

Five great comics come to Hungerford for our next show.

Mike Cox

Mike Cox has quickly made his mark on the comedy circuit with his his sharp wit and everyday cynicism which have seen him crowned winner of the Fosters South Coast Comedian of the Year, while he reached the final of Amused Moose Laugh Off 2016 both the semi-finals of So You Think You’re Funny in 2012 and The Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year in 2013. Mike’s accessible style and ease with both mainstream and alternative audiences currently make him one of the most enjoyable comics to watch.

Joseph Jacobs

Joseph is another fine act from a long tradition of Jewish comedians. He is also a rapper and writer. Since 2012, he has performed nationally and internationally, sharing bills with acts including Bill Burr, Stewart Lee and Mr. Motivator.
His live shows effortlessly flit between hip hop and comedy and he’s been seen/heard on Channel 4, BBC Radio 4, BBC 6 Music, Radio 1XTRA, plus gained millions of viral video views online.
In 2017, Joe took Ripe to the Edinburgh Fringe where it received critical acclaim.
‘Jewish Mike Skinner with jokes’ The Wee Review ****
‘Comedy Gold’ Broadway Baby ****
‘Stalks his comedy like a panther at night’ Mumble Comedy ****

Tara Newton-Wordsworth

Based in Hungerford, born in Australia, Tara is a comedian who blends sharp observation with character-based comedy. This is her second visit to Hungerford Comedy Club.

Spring Day

All the way from New York, Spring was voted Brooklyn’s Best Comedian, and is a uniquely sharp, dark and bubbly American you don’t want to miss. A fluent Japanese speaker with a cheshire cat smile and wickedly sage advice, Spring dishes out observational comedy and stories that come straight from the heart and will make you laugh out loud and feel better about life.

Roger Monkhouse

Simply one of the best live acts on the circuit, Roger has performed in all the top UK clubs and is guaranteed to have you laughing all the way home. He is a consummate stand-up who employs a deadly combination of charm and menace to exert a masterful control over any audience. As a seasoned corporate host and TV warm-up he improvises freely with the crowd but is nonetheless distinguished as a comic by the intelligence of his material and his keen eye for a fine phrase, his easy observational style spiked by the signal flares of an accomplished gag writer. In 2016 he was voted Best Compere by fellow comics.

How Shostakovich Changed My Mind @ The Croft Hall
Feb 2 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm
How Shostakovich Changed My Mind @ The Croft Hall

‘There’s something about hearing your most painful emotions transformed into something beautiful..’ The old Russian who uttered those words spoke for countless fellow survivors of Stalin’s reign of terror. And the ‘something beautiful’ he had in mind was the music of Dmitri Shostakovich.

BBC music broadcaster Stephen Johnson – “the authoritative British voice of classical music” (Michael Tumelty) – will be talking about the power of Shostakovich’s music during Stalin’s reign of terror, and looking at the extraordinary healing effect of music on sufferers of mental illness. He asks how is it that music that reflects pain, fear and desolation can help sufferers find – if not a way out, then a way to bear these feelings and ultimately rediscover pleasure in existence?

Johnson will draw on his own personal experiences, and the talk will be complemented by pieces of Shostakovich’s music. Afterwards he take will be happy to take questions from the audience and sign copies of which will be available to buy on the night.

“Stephen Johnson is one of our most sensitive and thoughtful music critics, and this book, written from the heart about a composer whom he loves and admires, will prove to be a landmark in the understanding of its subject” – Sir Roger Scruton
