Animal Experience Day – An African Experience @ The Nature Discovery Centre

Come and meet the keepers from ‘The Animal Experience’. This week they are bring a selection of animals which will bring a taste of Africa to Thatcham! Sessions at 10am, 11.30am, 1pm, 2pm, & 3pm

On the day you will meet Meerkats from the Kalahari desert, African Hedgehogs — found all over Africa but quite distinct from those found in this country. Gambian Pouch Rats, used for sniffing out landmines.

An African Grey Parrot: “Georgie” — the most intelligent of parrots, and with an extensive vocabulary! A Royal Python, from West Africa. A Bosc’s Monitor Lizard — found from Senegal to Eritrea. An Emperor Scorpion — one of the largest species of scorpions. Some Madagascan hissing cockroaches and an African giant millipede.

Visitors will learn all about the animals themselves, their habitat, the unique adaptations they demonstrate, and the environmental issues that threaten to impact them, and of course everyone will get to hold and interact with many of the animals.

Please note: this list may vary slightly if for example animals are carrying young.

Who is this event suitable for?
Everyone is welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult who has also booked a place.

What to bring?
A camera if you would like a record of the event.

Is there an age limit for children?

Children must be over 3+ years

Fantastic Wildlife Fridays: Photo Scavenger Hunt @ The Nature Discovery Centre

A scavenger hunt with a difference! Using your digital/phone camera, collect shots of all the items on the list to win a prize.

Your challenge: to collect photos capturing all the items off a nature-themed list.  Work as a team to find and photograph everything on the list and you will get a prize, plus more fun activities like den building and bug hunting in our special Butterfly Lake area.  Examples of items that might be on the list: a spiky leaf; a cloud that looks like an animal; a selfie with your favourite tree…

There are two sessions, at 10.30am-12.30pm and 2.00pm-4.00pm. The ‘tickets’ link takes you to a page showing both listings.
