Joys & Sorrows: The Medlam Family Quartet @ The Croft Hall
Nov 10 @ 8:00 pm – 9:45 pm

The Medlam Family String Quartet, consisting of Lukas, Ingrid and Charles and nearly family member Mia Bodet will be joined by Hannah Medlam (soprano), and Corby Welch (tenor) from the Düsseldorf Opera, for an evening of predominantly Austrian Music, with works by Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Korngold, Ingrid Seifert and Lukas Medlam. There will also be rarely performed early twentieth century pieces for string quartet and voice by Karl Weigl and Josef Marx, who sets poems from Heyse’s “Italian Song Book”.

The significant date of the occasion will be commemorated by Ingrid Seifert’s “Where will you be?”, composed to her own poem, inspired by Sioban Coppinger’s sculpture “Blown Away”, now at the National Memorial Arboretum near Lichfield.

“The highlight of the evening was Corby Welch, who brought his patiently matured lyricism and seemingly inexhaustible reserves to this powerhouse of a role.” (Tannhäuser in Weimar)

“Hannah Medlam was in a class of her own, rising to both the dramatic and the intimate lyrical challenges, showing secure delivery throughout her range .” (Hamburg, 2017)

As musicians in demand internationally, they’ve performed in many of the world’s finest concert halls and festivals as soloists and chamber musicians, ranging from performing at the Royal Albert Hall (JP Ekins), to leading the Alison Balsom Ensemble, (James Toll) to performing as gamba soloist with the Academy of Ancient Music (Jonathan Rees). The trio will be presenting a programme of brilliant music that ranges from joyous, to vivid, to funereal, and with everything in-between.

Marlborough Choral Society Christmas Concert @ Saint Mary's Chruch

Marlborough Choral Society Christmas Concert @ Saint Mary's Chruch | England | United Kingdom

King Wenceslas To The Rescue
Marlborough Choral Society Christmas Concert
St Mary’s Church – 8 December at 19h30.

The story of King Wenceslas who, with his somewhat reluctant page, braved the cruel winter’s night to go to the aid of a poor, hungry man, will form the centrepiece of the Marlborough Choral Society’s concert on 8 December.

This will be the Marlborough premiere or “Wenceslas”, by the acclaimed contemporary composer Bob Chilcott. It was commissioned in 2014 by the John Lewis Partnership to celebrate their anniversary. The traditional words by JM Neale are interwoven with additional text by Bob Chilcott’s friend, the poet Charles Bennett. While working on the piece Chilcott is quoted as saying “I couldn’t help thinking that the journey undertaken by the King and Page was not unlike that taken by delivery drivers in foul weather to ensure that customers received their provisions.”

The concert will be conducted by David Ripley and the programme will also include a by Vivaldi, Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols”together with traditional carols for audience participation. Local musicians will provide accompaniment for the choir.

In the spirit of Wenceslas, there will be a retiring collection for the Devizes Food Bank (Trussell Trust).

Tickets £10, available from Sound Knowledge, choir members or on the door.
