Paul James and the Drowned Lovers @ ACE Space
Mar 23 @ 8:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Paul James & The Drowned Lovers

Local boy Paul James is best known as a member of the legendary folk band Blowzabella.

Recently Paul made his first solo album “The Drowned Lover and Other Dark Tales” which draws on his love of traditional folk songs with strong stories to tell and his ability to bring all kinds of contemporary music influences together in striking ways.

The Drowned Lovers is a rock band that draws heavily on traditional folk music, folklore, world music and jazz influences and features top draw musician friends and collaborators.

This is their launch gig where they’ll be playing the whole album, a couple of great songs by local songwriter, the late great Des Simmons and maybe a couple of surprising cover versions.
Paul James – vocals, saxophone
Fiona Barrow – violin
Emma Holbrook – drums
Chris Moore – keyboards
Victor Nicholls – electric guitar, electronica
Jo Wadeson – bass

Maia Hendrickx and Calum Roy are both well known individually to regulars of ACE Space’s monthly open mic night, Unplugged. At May 2018 Unplugged they appeared as duo and went down a storm.  Since then they appeared at the one day mini-festival ACE Space @ Shaw House and supporting Tell Tale Tusk. Having previously worked together in various bands, they decided to write and perform their own music as a duo and have been combining a love of Americana, Indie and Folk with lush harmonies ever since. This is a case where the sum is greater than the individual parts – a great example of synergy.

Tickets: £12 (Earlybird £10 until 9 March or while stocks last)

Tickets are available locally in advance from Hogan Music with no booking fee or click here to buy tickets from wegottickets

– – –

The ACE Space bar usually stocks draught ale eg Good Old Boy (£3.50 pint), bottled / canned beers, lagers, ciders, wines, spirits and soft drinks. Interval drinks may be ordered in advance. Note bar is cash only.

Seating is normally informally grouped around tables in the main hall. Come early for the best choice of seats.

N.B. Due to nearby construction work, there is no car parking and very restricted turning capacity at the venue so please use the nearby car parks (£2 for the evening) or look for on-street parking other than in St Nicholas Road, so as not to inconvenience local residents. Most parking spaces in Bartholomew Street are free after 6pm.

Marlborough Choral Society Spring Concert @ Saint Mary's Chruch
Mar 30 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Marlborough Choral Society Spring Concert @ Saint Mary's Chruch | England | United Kingdom

The Marlborough Choral Society’s pre-Easter concert on 30 March at St. Mary’s Church, features two deeply spiritual works of dramatically contrasting styles.

Mozart’s “Solemn Vespers” of 1780 follows the strict structure required by the Church of the day. The text is a series of Psalms, (in Latin), which culminates in a setting of the Magnificat. The rich and melodic choral parts are highlighted by the soaring soprano solo in the well-loved “Laudate Dominum”.

In complete contrast is John Rutter’s modern setting of six well known spirituals including the very moving “Deep River” and “Steal Away”.  Like the “Vespers”, they draw on Old Testament sources. In this context it is used to express the pain and faith of African slaves, hoping for a better life “back home.” “Home” had a double meaning – referring both to Heaven and the lands “beyond the Jordan” which meant the free states to the North. We end with a rousing rendition of “When the Saints Come Marching In”.

We also welcome the Merlin Clarinet Ensemble, so a varied programme with something for everyone!

Wine will be available at the interval
