Kinderlandverschickung Talk @ Greenham Common Tower
Nov 28 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

The Internal Evacuation Of German Children In WW2

Kinderlandverschickung had a greater political bias than in Britain and was influenced greatly by the philosophy of the Hitler Youth. This talk will provide an insight into its planning and eventual demise and look at the effect it had not only on the children, but also on the parents. This is a topic which is rarely, if ever, taught in UK schools.

Presented by Prof Martin Parsons, who is a Research Fellow and Honorary Life Fellow at the University of Reading, where he previously led the Research Centre for Evacuee and War Child Studies.

Doors open at 7pm and the cafe will be open serving hot and cold drinks and cake.

The car park can be dark. We will provide lighting but please bring a torch.

Hungerford Town & Manor Open Forum Evening @ The Town Hall
Nov 29 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Hungerford Town & Manor Open Forum Evening @ The Town Hall | England | United Kingdom

The ancient charity of the Town & Manor of Hungerford is holding its first ever Open Forum evening at the Town Hall from 7 to 9pm on Thursday 29 November.

The forum will give residents of Hungerford the opportunity to find out about the activities that the Trustees of the Town & Manor undertakes on behalf of the Commoners. The evening will consist of short presentations about the Common, the Town Hall and the fishery, along with the history of Hocktide and the role of the Town & Manor in Hungerford.

The Constable of the Town & Manor, Ellie Dickins said, “As the first of its kind, this will be an historic meeting. The purpose is to inform the residents of Hungerford exactly what it is that the Town & Manor does and to answer questions regarding their work for the town. I warmly invite everyone in the town to come and join me, for what I hope will be an informative and interesting evening.”

The First Egyptologists @ Coronation Hall | Woodley | England | United Kingdom

8 Dec 2018 2.00 pm : Professor Alan Lloyd

Egyptology starts with the Ancient Egyptians, the best-known example being Khaemwese, a son of Ramesses II. A particularly interesting case is Horapollo who wrote at the time when Pharaonic culture was almost dead. This lecture will explore aspects of ancient Egyptology to determine what these writers thought they were doing and how well, or badly, they did it.

Death Cafe @ Village Hotel, Shaw Hill Leisure Park
Dec 11 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Death Cafe @ Village Hotel, Shaw Hill Leisure Park | England | United Kingdom

About this Death Cafe

The reasons for a Death Cafe include interest, curiosity and a desire to help people to think about death and dying.  We hope that it helps to take away some of the fear surrounding death.

We are also interested in why people come and how people feel about the subject.

There is a cafe atmosphere which is relaxed, informal, friendly and we hope for open and honest discussion.

Try it and let’s see where it goes!

About Sue Holden

Sue is a Life Supporter and works with people who are grieving and as a Civil Funeral Celebrant. She is used to talking about loss and death with people and helping them to acknowledge that ‘death happens’. Sue is also very keen that some of the ‘taboo’ around the subject should be dispelled and that when you talk an interest and curiosity can be invoked and the surrounding emotions become less prevalent.
