Faustus @ St Lawrence's Church, Hungerford
Feb 23 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Benji, Saul and Paul return to give you their unique take on English folk music.

Faustus us a English tradition folk trio, nominated in the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, featuring three of the leading lights of their generation of folk artists: Benji Kirkpatrick (Seth Lakeman Band, Bellowhead), Saul Rose (Waterson:Carthy, Whapweazel) and Paul Sartin (Bellowhead, Belshazzar’s Feast). Rooted deeply in the English tradition, in 2007 they received a 75th Anniversary Award from the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

‘Death and Other Animals’ received the 2017 German Critics Award (Schallplatenkritik Bestenliste) in the Folk/Singer-Songwriter/World Music category. It has received at 2018 nomination for the Maltzhaus Plauen Music Music Prize.

Faustus have been touring with The Tranports, a revival and reworking of Peter Bellamy’s ballad opera, which has received stunning reviews and five stars from the Guardian. They are working alongside the University of Exeter on a collection of 19th century texts from the Lancashire Cotton Famine, one of their musical settings having recently featured on BBC Radio 4.

The Songs of Leonard Cohen – Keith James @ The Croft Hall
Mar 9 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Enigmatic, mysterious and sub textural, songwriter Leonard Cohen was an unflinching character, with an exact sense of prose, wry humour and courage to wrestle with the unspoken, forgiving human frailty with the stroke of each line.

The chilling announcement of Leonard’s passing marked the end of an era. His music befriended an entire generation. Within every line of his writing, he has been challenging us to listen more carefully, speak more thoughtfully, think more deeply and recognize our own fragility. A Man of Grace. Our World misses him very much!

With a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way and an undying love of the ‘pure song’ Keith James gives you a concert of Cohen’s amazing material in the most intimate and sensitive way imaginable, exposing the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form. Keith has performed an extensive tour of this concert in Theatres and Arts Centres across the UK, giving close to 400 concerts to well over 100,000 people. This has proved to be one of the greatest honours in Keith James’ 40 year career in music. Keith lives in Powys, Wales and Andalucia, Spain

Included in the concert are Cohen’s well known songs: Famous Blue Raincoat, Sisters of Mercy, Suzanne and Hallelujah alongside his rarer and profound writing such as Who by Fire, Joan of Arc and Secret Life. Also included are Keith’s dramatic and absorbing performances based on the work of Federico Garcia Lorca – Cohen’s greatest influence.

‘Keith James has become a pillar of trust. A sublimely intimate and engaging voice’  Sunday Times

Mawkin @ ACE Space
Mar 16 @ 8:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Mawkin

Mawkin’s extraordinary brand of boisterous folk music is one to warm hearts, minds and feet. Built on a solid traditional foundation and influenced by the swagger of 90s indie rock and Bellowhead-style brouhaha, this five-piece’s sound comes alive with a large dose of Essex-boy energy on stage. No surprise then that MOJO regards them as ‘unconditionally mighty’, and Q Magazine declares them ‘invigorating and highly inventive’. The 2018 album and tour ‘Down Among the Dead Men’ is a confident stride forward for a band that’s gathering serious momentum.

As a quintet they are not short of kudos. Brothers James and David Delarre are well-known for their involvement with Eliza Carthy, Norma Waterson, Jim Moray and Topette! They have also provided stand-in support for Bellowhead. Nick Cooke plays melodeon with Kate Rusby and False Lights, and is also a leading mastering engineer. Lee Richardson is an award-winning producer of TV, advertising and trailer music.

Katherine Priddy

Birmingham-based folk artist Katherine Priddy has recently re-emerged onto the scene with her long-awaited debut EP ‘Wolf’, which has already been well received by the BBC 2 Folk Show, BBC 6 Music and BBC Wales and has had some excellent reviews. Folk Radio UK pronounced the release as “something extraordinary indeed…one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard. Her tone, phrasing pitch and sentiment…it’s flawless”. At only 23, it seems hard to imagine that Priddy’s haunting vocals and impeccable finger picking guitar has already been captivating audiences around the UK for the past 7 years.

Priddy’s original works are delivered with an emotional maturity, depth and a vulnerable tenderness that still carries a darker edge, citing Nick Drake, Tunng and Imagined Village amongst her many influences. It’s clear that, despite the delicate nuances of her sound, Katherine Priddy is not a fragile wallflower destined to fade away, but a young woman that means business.”

Marlborough Choral Society Spring Concert @ Saint Mary's Chruch
Mar 30 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Marlborough Choral Society Spring Concert @ Saint Mary's Chruch | England | United Kingdom

The Marlborough Choral Society’s pre-Easter concert on 30 March at St. Mary’s Church, features two deeply spiritual works of dramatically contrasting styles.

Mozart’s “Solemn Vespers” of 1780 follows the strict structure required by the Church of the day. The text is a series of Psalms, (in Latin), which culminates in a setting of the Magnificat. The rich and melodic choral parts are highlighted by the soaring soprano solo in the well-loved “Laudate Dominum”.

In complete contrast is John Rutter’s modern setting of six well known spirituals including the very moving “Deep River” and “Steal Away”.  Like the “Vespers”, they draw on Old Testament sources. In this context it is used to express the pain and faith of African slaves, hoping for a better life “back home.” “Home” had a double meaning – referring both to Heaven and the lands “beyond the Jordan” which meant the free states to the North. We end with a rousing rendition of “When the Saints Come Marching In”.

We also welcome the Merlin Clarinet Ensemble, so a varied programme with something for everyone!

Wine will be available at the interval
