Maymessy Cookery School and Venue for Hire

Maymessy is an empowering cookery school and Community Interest Company that rents out its amazing facilities to help fund a social enterprise supporting vulnerable young people and adults in the local area.

The Venue

Maymessy has transformed a disused cowshed in a stunning location near Wantage into a state-of-the-art venue space and training kitchen.

Lucky to sit in acres of its own land with views of the Ridgeway, Maymessy is a peaceful and private place.

The kitchen has six Miele hobs and ovens supporting 12 students and the adjoining hall has a lofty high ceiling. There are also outside spaces to use including a large decking area, vegetable patch and orchard.

It is a perfect venue to rent for yoga and meditation classes, retreats, corporate training and away days, parties, photo shoots, bake off competitions, demand led cookery classes, camps, weddings or parties.

The Achievements of Maymessy

Maymessy works with local charities, schools and youth groups and makes a huge impact on the children who go there. After a few hours at Maymessy, the children have more collaboration; meaningful communication; teamwork, confidence, self esteem and time outside in the shared garden as well as greater knowledge of healthy eating and wellbeing.

They are thrilled to have been one of the finalists for the Social Responsibility award for Vale 4 Business awards in our first year.

First birthday party, May 2018

It was an afternoon of family fun, delicious food and a little competition as empowering cookery school and social enterprise Maymessy celebrated its first anniversary by hosting a family food festival.

Dozens of local residents popped along to the sold-out event, held on Maymessy’s grounds at West Challow near Wantage, to help raise money for young carers in Oxfordshire.

Anna Richards, Founder of Maymessy says: “We wanted to celebrate our first birthday in style and what better way than by offering young carers and their families an afternoon of respite in our beautiful grounds here at Maymessy. It was super fun for everyone with a circus skills workshop, performances from a rock choir, helter-skelter, bouncy castle, face painting and stalls. We even ran our own Bake Off competition and were delighted to have it judged by former Great British Bake Off contestant Christine Wallace.”

With over 2,700 young carers in the county and this number rising steadily, Maymessy saw the festival as a great opportunity to raise some vital funds so it can continue to deliver this work with young people. Ten per cent of the afternoon’s proceeds were donated to Oxfordshire charity, Be Free Young Carers.

“We were very grateful to receive grants from the Vale of White Horse District Council, Tesco’s in Faringdon and the Big Lottery, as well as refreshments from Waitrose in Faringdon which enabled us to host our festival optimising the amount of funds we were able to raise,” continues Anna. “We’re now looking forward to the year ahead and continuing our work with empowering young people. We’d love to hear from local businesses who would be interested in supporting our enterprise and helping to bring our vision to fruition.”

“I really liked it because we were allowed to add what we wanted and were able to put in what ever we all wanted. I also liked how Maia and Anna were able to help us and make the curry with us. It was very good.” Children’s Cooking Summer Camp, August 2017

“It was the best trip we have ever been on.” Daisy and Libby, Ridgeway School summer trip 2017

“Thank you so much for the most fabulous afternoon, we all had a brilliant time. The cookery school and the surrounding gardens and countryside looked stunning and you had thought up a perfect format for the group.” St Hugh’s mums for cooking demo and lunch June 2017

“I attended a bread-making course held here and experienced a bright, modern, well planned and equipped multi purpose facility. Great cooking stations and classroom facility. Hosts were superb and really looked after us.” George at the Wild baking day 3 October 2017

“Anna came out to greet us and gave us such a friendly welcome as we arrived at the farm, we knew it was going to be a fun day. Judith, our teacher for the day was very friendly and professional and knew her subject very well.  We all went home proudly with a very good looking sourdough loaf. I shall be looking out for another course and would commit very happily.” MK

“I want to thank you for giving our young people, and the older people too such a great morning at Maymessy. The whole group gained so much from working together, helping each other and eating together. It felt like a family occasion. They were very proud of what they achieved and couldn’t wait to get back to their mom to give them a muffin.
You have played a big part in what we try and achieve at YoCO and I thank you for that.
We will be back.” Berinsfield YoCO Group

“Thank you to you and Georgie for a fabulous day making Sri Lankan food. It was very informative and I’m feeling truly inspired to be a bit more authentic in my curry cooking, and use more spice combinations rather than grabbing a jar of paste. Can’t wait to see what’s next!” Katie Brader

“Anna was a brilliant host and Maymessy is a fantastic, high spec facility in a beautiful location. We look forward to exploring opportunities for introducing the children and families we work with to Maymessy.” Lucy Wise
