Charity Plugs

• Thanks to everyone who responded last week to Newbury Soup Kitchen’s appeal for supplies to help local rough sleepers. This cold snap is raising awareness of their plight. The new Healthwatch West Berkshire report on homelessness sheds light on the causes and experience of homelessness and how hard it is for homeless people to get the help they need, especially when many of them have mental health issues.

• If you would like to help, please click here for a list of local organisations supporting the homeless.

• There is also a Rough Sleepers Solidarity Sleep Out from 8pm TONIGHT Thursday 1 March in Newbury Marketplace, organised by West Berkshire Save Our Services.

• There is still time to make nominations for the 2018 Newbury Civic Awards (closing date noon on Friday 9 March) to recognise the huge contribution volunteers make to the local community. For more information, click here.

• See this week’s Local News for a high five to just some of those who’ve raised money for or otherwise supported good causes recently. (If you know of any person or organisation that deserves a mention in this way, do let us know).

Seasonal Snippets

• This week’s recipe is the warming Butternut Squash, Sweet Potato, Lentil and Ginger Soup

• Sad news that Marlborough author and Living While Dying blogger Vanessa Lafaye died yesterday and Dany Bosek who taught at the school in Hungerford’s twin town of Ligueil and contributed recipes and low energy gardening tips to PP, died on 13 February. Both lovely, talented, funny, brave women who battled cancer. We will miss them.

• Please stay safe in this weather and only drive if you absolutely have to. Lots of shops and libraries have announced they will be closed tomorrow so do check before going anywhere.Just heard that the Lent Lunch and Women’s World Day of Prayer service that would have been held in Hungerford tomorrow (Fri 2 Mar) has been rescheduled to Fri 16 Mar at the Methodist Church at 2pm (after Lent Lunch at 12.30pm)
