Could You Be An On-Call Firefighter?

Earn approx £500/mnth as a Retained Firefighter. Retained firefighters are men and women who do ordinary jobs, but are ready to go to a ‘shout’ the moment that a call comes. They may be part-time, but they are trained and capable people on the front line, saving lives and making headlines. It is a paid position and across Berkshire average earnings are approx £6,000 a year (£500 a month).

To be an on-call fire fighter you need to live or work within 6 – 8 minutes of your local station. For exact times for each station please click here.

There is a shortage at the moment of people who will turn out and help in an emergency especially in rural areas. For example Hungerford fire engine is currently crewed about 50% of the time at the moment. You might be just the person to fill the gap.

Firefighters come in all shapes and sizes, although it’s a tough job and you need to be fit and healthy. We are particularly keen for more women to join.

It is a paid position on an hourly rate with paid holiday time as well. Once you are qualified you will be on call for approximately 70 hrs /week (although this is negotiable dependent on the station’s needs) and can be at hours to suit your schedule. If you live locally these could be night time hours. If you work locally, and you are self-employed or your employer is flexible, you can be on call while you are at work.

Have a Go

Have a Go Days are a great opportunity to meet firefighters, ask questions and try out the physical tests that potential firefighters need to undergo to gauge fitness levels.

Here is Scott Farrell talking about how he got on at the Hungerford Have a Go Day in April:
