Hungerford Rugby Club November/December 2017 News

Hungerford Rugby Club continues to grow and go from strength to strength since September, with the senior club now running two squads and a veterans’ side. Our first team has had a bit of slow start losing their first four fixtures – but as is often the case with HRFC – they then seem to rally and have won their last four league games.

This season for the first time we are hosting a player from New Zealand on an exchange programme. One of our players last season went out to New Zealand, gaining valuable player experience but also lots of life skills, and we are now returning the favour. The vets have their first game of the season this Wednesday up at the club under our new floodlights – please come and support these gentlemen in their later years!

Our touch teams continue to grow, and welcome new players from 16 to 85 of both sexes, to have fun, keep fit and try to keep in shape.

Moving on to the juniors, we are now running sides from U6 to U17 and are widely recognised throughout Berkshire and surrounding counties for our ethos of inclusivity, and fairness. We have an excellent coaching team with over 50 qualified coaches and over 20 qualified first aiders. The juniors are an essential element of the club and this season has seen the very first players from the Junior section graduate to the seniors. It also allows them to gain valuable friendships and practical experience in how the club operates. As it is run entirely by volunteers, this kind of engagement is vital to our continuing success. We welcome new players of all ages, all abilities and at all times of the year.

We continue to promote rugby for all, regardless of size, gender or social circumstances. This season alone we are supporting a number of children, helping them with their registrations and kit.

Saturday 9 December sees the official opening of the floodlights at Hungerford Rugby Club. This has been a long time in the making. After two years of hard fundraising and support from the RFU and other fundraising organisations, the floodlights are now up and working. Please come and join us for an enjoyable afternoon that will see the second and first teams playing, followed by the official opening at 5.15.
