Established in March 2010, the award-winning, family Cook & Butcher farmshop on Thatcham Broadway is completely passionate about quality.

They are proud to stock native breed beef from Broadview Farm in Cold Ash where the cattle are allowed to slowly mature on the grassland of the Ridge. Broadview has recently been assigned Red Tractor status and also supplies venison from the deer that roam on their grounds.

Pete offers pork from Fernworth Farm in Headley because they have a selection of rare breed pigs with good flavour and lamb, hogget, mutton from Compton. Goat is also available to order.

To ensure traceability of all his meat, Pete Congerton buys only whole carcasses direct from the farmer (this means that certain cuts are not always available).

You can buy online at however Pete recommends that new customers come into the shop for their first purchase so they can discuss the best joints for them.

Turkeys & Christmas

Local Walters Farm Turkeys start at 4.5 kg. The smaller sizes get booked up first so don’t delay in placing your order. Pete also offers a boneless turkey breast option (and uses the rest of the bird to make his tasty Coronation Turkey sausages!).

Pete’s chipolatas and sausage meat are very popular at Christmas and all are gluten free.

Homemade Sausages

Cook & Butcher makes all their sausages by hand with homemade recipes and source local produce to do so. They offer a famous range of flavours you will not find anywhere else – for instance Coronation Turkey (with curry powder, turkey, mango chutney, chives & spring onion and sultana), The Italian Job (pork, fresh spinach, parmesan cheese, tomato passata sauce) and The Hangover (black pudding, wild mushroom, smoked streaky bacon, baked beans and HP sauce).

Cooked & Cured Meats

A range of smoked and cured hams, salami and charcuterie.


Farmshop Deli Range

Cook & Butcher boasts a wide range of local products at reasonable prices.  Wessex Flour milled in Wantage, Wyatts Cider from Southend Bradfield, Two Cocks Beer from Enbourne, West Berkshire Beer, Chilli Queen jams from Compton, Atkins & Potts sauces from Newbury, Beechwood Eggs from Hampstead Norreys, Rockin’ Good Salt, Tilly’s Chocolate Treats, and a wide range of English cheeses.

Butchery Service

Pete provides a butchery service for local farmers and smallholders where the slaughterhouse delivers the carcass to Pete and he butchers, vacuum seals and labels the meat to the customers needs. He can also cure gammons.
