There is a lot to be said for letting your kids get bored so they have time to find out what they are interested in. However in our experience this only works if you can get them away from their phones/wifi signal…so it’s lucky there is plenty of great activities in our area this summer!  For lots more individual events see the Penny Post calendar (select Categories: For Children)

Drop Them Off

Summer Holiday Club for 4-8 yrs at Springburn Childcare, Shefford Woodlands. 8am-6pm. £40 per day inc all meals and fab activities inc treasure hunts & clay modelling.

Camp Adventure for 5-12 yrs at Hungerford Leisure Centre. 8am-6pm Mon-Fri, 24 July -25 Aug. Fun activities inc wobsticle, trampolining, go-karting. Call 01488 683 303 to book. £12/half £24/full day (with West Berks card)

Summer Activities at Riverside Community Centre, Clay Hill, Newbury RG14 2FG  for 5 -13 yrs 10am-3pm Mon, Weds & Fri. £4 per child (inc lunch) from 31 July -1 Sept (exc Aug Bank Holiday Monday) No need to book.

Marlborough Camp Activate for 5-14 yrs at Marlborough Leisure Centre.

Burn that Energy!

Summer Tennis Camps for 5-9 yrs and 10-16 yrs in Hungerford, Chieveley, Newbury and Tilehurst (click link above for dates) with Ignition Tennis

Bikeability courses for 10+ yrs in Thatcham (31 July/1 Aug, 14/15 Aug) and Newbury (7/8 Aug) . Great chance for kids to increase their confidence and safety cycling on the road. (See link for how to book).

Summer Football Camps for 5-15 yrs (boys and girls) in Swindon, Lambourn, Wantage and Marlborough with professional coaches from Swindon Town Football in the Community (click link for dates)

Big Butterfly Count 10am-12noon Fri 4 Aug, Riverside Community Centre, Newbury. Free family drop-in event to see how many different species of butterfly you can find and learn how you can find and learn how to attract more butterflies to your garden. Big Butterfly Count runs from 14 July – 6 Aug

Days Out

The Living RainforestLivingRainforest, Hampstead Norreys. Explore the rainforest this summer without leaving the UK. Discover free-roaming lizards, birds and butterflies as well as monkeys, an armadillo, toucans and much more. See banana, coffee, cocoa, ginger, vanilla plants and other plants that provide medicines, cosmetics and building materials. Open every day with daily animal feeding sessions and free guided tours every weekend.

4 Kingdoms Adventure Park & Family Farm on A339 just south of Newbury with over 21 play zones including animal petting areas and train rides.

Cotswold Water Park not far from Swindon offers a wide range of water sports (inc wake-boarding, wind-surfing) as well as cycle tracks, beach area, fishing, sailing and camping.

Jungle Parc for high-wire tree-top adventure at Lydiard Park, Swindon

Didcot Railway Centre open every day until 10 September. Enjoy their unique collection of Great Western Railway steam engines, coaches, wagons, a recreation of Brunel’s broad gauge railway, a picnic area and railway themed play park.  Check out their great Gala Events coming up (including a chance to ride on The Flying Scotsman!)
