All Stars Junior Cricket comes to Hungerford Cricket Club

As well as fielding two senior teams in the Hampshire Cricket League and a midweek XI in the Downs Cricket T20 League, Hungerford Cricket Club also has a thriving youth section, with teams competing at U9, U11, U13 and U15 levels. No less than six Hungerford juniors were selected by Berkshire Cricket to join its Junior Development Programme last winter.

Led by the indefatigable Andy Bell, and supported by Level 2 qualified coaches, Jake Rowell, Matt Galbraith and Dan Hawkins, the junior section continues to go from strength to strength. The emphasis is on providing a fun learning environment, where young cricketers are encouraged to develop to the very best of their abilities. As a result, a number of youngsters who have come through the junior coaching programme are now playing in the Club’s senior sides.

This year, the England and Wales Cricket Board launched a nationwide initiative – All Stars Cricket – to introduce 5-8 year olds to the game over an 8-week period. With its emphasis on youth development and participation, it was a natural move for Hungerford CC to join the programme, and on Friday 26th May, the Club played host to forty 5-8 year-olds, all keen to get their first taste of cricket.

Clive Wooldridge, the ‘Activator’ who runs the All Stars Cricket programme for the Club (and opening bowler for the 1st XI), reflects on a highly successful first week: “The All Stars Cricket programme has been an amazing success for Hungerford Cricket Club.  Last Friday we had upwards of 70 children and parents enjoying a glorious, sunny evening and taking part in a wide range of cricket-related activities – and experiencing how enjoyable the game of cricket can be. It was also great to have the help of some of our older juniors.

“After booking online directly on the All Stars website, the children received a colourful personalised shirt, equipment and kitbag. As a result, the cricket club last Friday night was a riot of colour, enthusiasm and fun. All Stars Cricket is a fantastic and exciting way to introduce youngsters to the game of cricket and developing some core skills that will benefit them in all sorts of ways. And who knows – we may just be seeing the first steps into the game of some future England stars!”
