Pleno Viura Spanish White  with Spring Rolls

spring rolls recipeThe fresh and zesty flavours in the Spring Rolls need a wine that is also light, crisp and fresh in flavour. Anything oaky or oily is out, and zingy clean flavoured grapes like Viura are more suitable.

Viura is an indigenous Spanish white grape and it’s pure rounded flavours, without any sharp edges or bitterness will compliment this dish perfectly.

PLENO NAVARRA VIURABodegas Pleno Viura, Navarra, Spain

If you are fed up with Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay as a good daily quaffing white, then this fresh summer wine is just for you. The Vuira grape offers ripe apple and pear fruits, a nice citrus bite and clean long refreshing palate. Bring on the summer!

Milcampos with Lamb Kebabs

Kebab recipeThe Tempranillo grape really comes alive when it’s is matched with certain red meats.  Lamb is one of the perfect matches with Tempranillo as the texture of the meat and this grape marry so well together.

Dishes like Lamb Kebabs are often quite perfumed and the oak aging in this wine go towards a superb complimentary food and wine match.

A wine with cult status amongst US and European journalists, Bodega La Milagrosa Milcampos is a stunning bold richly flavoured mouthful. Created using the Tempranillo grape, known best in the Rioja region, this wine is sumptuous now but will cellar well for quite some years.

Biferno Montepulciano with Baked Lamb Meatballs

Lamb meatballs and potatoes FIFor me Baked Lamb Meatballs is a good solid comfort food recipe from Romilla Arber’s great What’s For Dinner? Second Helpings cookbook.

So a wine with an easy and enjoyable fruit flavour is best.

I would go for the ever popular Biferno Montepulciano from central Abbruzzo in Italy. This wine wins lots of fans due to its supple bramble fruit palate, ripe red fruit flavours and clean finish.  Meatballs here we come!

Biferno Rosso Montepulciano, Abbruzzo, Italy  £10.99 ea.

Tormentoso Mourvedre with Stuffed Chard Leaves

Honesty chard recipeHaving tasted my way through a mind-boggling number of wines recently (all in the name of research obviously!) I stumbled across a little parcel of Mourvedre from Paarl in South Africa that would be perfect for this dish.

Laden with herb, rosemary and juicy black fruit flavours this grape is better known in the wines of Minervois and Fitou.

Here in the Cape, the grapes become riper and succulent leading to fuller more plush wines. Try this one to see what I mean.
