Wheatsheaf Sawdays award
The Wheatsheaf

violin tips case 400The Wheatsheaf is a charming, vibrant and recently re-furbished free house in the heart of the village of Chilton Foliat run by Masterchef semi-finalist Ollie Hunter and singer-songwriter Lauren Bransby who have created an exciting hub that offers delicious and fairly priced food and drink (either local, organic or sustainable and generally all three), live music.

They are proud winners of the Sawdays 2017/18 Local, Seasonal & Organic Produce Award out of 800 pubs that were shortlisted. Their aim is to become the most sustainable pub in the UK, as well as create a music studio and art gallery which can host gigs, parties or studios for artists. Every month they host live music, ranging from gypsy jazz and blues to folk and soul, with a themed menu to accompany it. Look out for festivals throughout the summer months in their garden with wild flowers and herbs, and the local artists that regularly exhibit in the pub.

They are passionate about finding the best flavoured tomato to the best sounding folk band. They are very proud of their suppliers which include Hungerford Park which is only five miles away and supplies organic meat, vegetables, charcuterie and chorizo. Flying Fish delivers fresh and sustainably-sourced fish straight from Cornish seas.

Ramsbury Brewery is even closer and supplies their award-winning ales and also two guest ales every week. They also stock craft lagers and ciders from Camden, Meantime and Aspalls.

Sunday Roasts

We all love roasts…we love knowing that a beautiful joint of meat is slowly cooking in the oven, potatoes in the same tray, whilst we go for a good walk.

When someone else is cooking for you, it is a truly special meal so Ollie will cook you a Sunday roast just like you would at home, using meat from nearby Hungerford Park Farm – all the trimmings, the best flavour and timed to perfection.

The Wheatsheaf is delighted to be included in the Independent’s Best Pubs for Sunday Lunch guide. Their approach to the Sunday roast avoids sliced meat, roasties and Yorkshire puds sitting in a heated cabinet, drying out while they are waiting to be ordered, then served with microwaved vegetables (as happens in many pubs).

“The most delicious traditional Sunday roast I have ever eaten. My foodie Dad (74) said, with a tear in his eye, ‘This is what beef used to taste like before supermarkets.'” Anna, Ramsbury

Wood-fired pizzas

These are now available every service – also ready for takeaway collection. The oven was imported from Florence and for the past year have been producing what customers say are “the best pizza we’ve ever had.”

Using Doves organic flour, the dough is made each day and allow it to prove for at least 24 hours. The generous toppings are all made fresh from local organic ingredients (many from the garden at Hungerford Park). The oven is on stand-by all the time… so do pop in for a delicious dinner or order a tasty takeaway.
